Perspective from a first time player in Origin
Recommendation…
I am putting this first as it is the least important of my statements and as you will see I have far more positive things to say and I want to leave those as the last thing you read… I expanded on it a bit for clarities sake, not because it’s overly important.
After some thought, If I had to make a recommendation I would say this… and I generally don’t see this at any larp so please take it with the knowledge that I have nothing but respect for everyone involved and that with no changes at all this larp group is more than outstanding!
Ok here it goes… NPC’s…
As I said I have never seen larps do this to any great degree, but my thoughts are that NPCs should get into their roles a little more. Now by this I don’t mean acting. Your NPCs have that down and I really mean it… They are extremely believable in their roles. What I am referring to is combat acting.
What I have witnessed (and this seems to be universal in larps) is that no matter what the NPC is playing once combat starts they tend to fight just like people. (With the notable exception of the beasts in this game, they were real monsters) As I said I have never seen anything else from the other games that I played, however I think it would be very cool to see NPCs fighting more like the creature they are currently representing.
I’m not saying the NPC’s should reduce their ability and make the fights less challenging… but I think slow zombies should fight like slow zombies… wide swings… staggered and disoriented movement. Puppets should try to move (and attack/defend) more like puppets… weird odd angled attacks with an almost dancelike quality, as if they were marionettes on strings.
Monsters especially creatures like orcs, goblins and ogres should fight with the brutal strength they possess and should steer clear of flashy, high dexterity combinations.
I haven’t come across a ravenger yet, but I would expect these guys to fight like animals with weapons… savage, powerful swipes with little regard to their own defense.
A little thing like this really can make the creature and encounters more unique and memorable in my opinion.
Ok, recommendation time over. Take this as you will it’s not a dig at anybody, just an observation that in my opinion could make the actual fighting seem more authentic. Please don’t think of it as a big deal.
On to the good stuff…
Plot was outstanding…
As a new person in town it felt exactly like I believe it would. I knew about and was involved in the plots that sprang up and there was ample opportunity for us newbies to get our feet wet. At the same time we had to be informed about past plot. This was not just realistic, but gave plenty of roleplay opportunity for both the more experienced players to tell their tales and for us new players to learn the history of the town from the perspective of the characters that lived there. It was really a pleasure listening to each tell their tales. It allowed for some fantastic roleplay for both us newbies and for the more experienced players… essentially giving us something to talk about.
Players and staff…
I simply can’t say enough good things about the player base of this group. Staff and the other players were all extremely helpful from the moment I started asking question online, right up through the end of my first event. (a special call out here to Youlanda, she was especially helpful) The players were friendly and accepting as were their characters in the game. Even as new arrivals in town we were allowed to accompany some of the more experienced members on quests and were cut in on the loot without having to be overly aggressive, or stoop to looting during combat… that was refreshing.
All of the NPCs were outstanding in their roles… funny when appropriate, serious and menacing when needed. Their acting was top notch, especially in the roleplay aspect.
Overall a great event…
The characters and the vast majority of the NPCs looked awesome, better than any game I have been to previously. This allowed for great immersion and plenty of in-game conversation and players did tend to stay in character.
As a first time player to this game I enjoyed myself immensely and will definitely return.
To the staff and NPCs… THANK YOU!
