The Age of Ascension is the current age – a time of new races and new alliances. It is marked by the violent end of Penumbra’s reign of terror, which was followed closely by the unification of all of the civilized races. It also marks the age in which the triumvirate was formed – the three kings who rule over all of the races. All of the territories and kingdoms that were once separate united into one overarching empire. The exception to this was the dark elven kingdom, which was still isolated at the beginning of the age. However, the destruction of their homeland was a catalyst that brought them back into the kingdom.
Time | Races/People Involved | Description |
0 AU | All | The high elves create a ritual that lets them sacrifice their entire race to destroy all psionic abilities. They band together in their capitol city and cast the ritual as warriors from all of the other remaining races band together for one final battle. The fire dragon that had been terrorizing the countryside flies in and attacks the ice dragon, much to the surprise of both sides, and it is taken out of the battle. After the ritual is cast, all of the high elves die, and Penumbra loses control over all of their slaves in the midst of the battle. There is a revolt, and the majority of the Penumbra race are killed off. The survivors flee to the wilderness and are systematically hunted and killed by the ïoden and kriegen forces. The war is over, and the races come together and decide to merge their kingdoms into one great empire |
? | Humans | The first human city is created on the other side of the Elkenwood |
115 AU | Everyone | Greater amounts of dire beasts, naturally occurring undead, elementals, and magical constructs start cropping up throughout the land. It is postulated that this is a result of the backlash from the high elven sacrifice ritual, but it is never proven. |
172 AU | The Kingdom Below, The Kingdom Above, Everyone | Maeve, the Lady of the Kingdom Below in the underground caves and caverns, covets the other kingdoms and wants to become the ruler of all fae. She comes out in force and starts marching toward Elkenwood. Mab, ruler of the Kingdom Above in the clouds, sees what is happening and sends her forces down to drive them back to the underground. A great battle ensues, but the forces are evenly matched. Both Maeve and Mab go to the triumvirate asking for help. The triumvirate chooses to help the Kingdom Above, and Maeve’s forces are driven back to their underground kingdom. Mab now owes the triumvirate a favor, and Maeve has become a bitter enemy of the surface. |
228 AU | Kriegen, goreki, ïoden | The kriegen try to sail out and explore the sea, but their ships are attacked by goreki and a massive kraken. The kriegen are forced back to the land, and they go to the ïoden to compare notes on the goreki race. The two races end up creating a coastal defense fund for any adventurers brave enough to explore and gather information on the sea |
262 AU | Humans, everyone else | Oberon comes to the human king in a dream and tells him to take his people through the Elkenwood. Before, this had been an impossible feat, but with the guidance of their king (and, likely, the help of the fae) the humans crossed through to the other side. The ku’rasi were the first to encounter them, and they were amazed to discover that the humans were from the other side of the wood. The ku’rasi and the human king went back to the edge of the wood and found Oberon, who told them that the humans alone were permitted to pass through his kingdom as long as they stuck to the path. The majority of the humans migrated away from their homeland to join the other races. |
300 AU | Elves, wilden | The elves manage to tweak the ïoden’s ascendance ritual, and they start going around to places with higher amounts of magical energy and ascending animals that are likely to turn into dire beasts. The wilden race is created. |
358 AU | Ku’rasi, ïoden, human | True death is discovered by a band of adventurers, and it is synthesized into the first poison that can permanently kill a vampire. The vampire plague that had run rampant for thousands of years finally began to subside with the discovery of True Death. |
430 AU 430 AU | Dark elves Everyone | A nexus springs up right outside the dark elven city, causing massive amounts of mana burn and a few mokoi to spring up. The dark elves are forced out of their caves, and their home is lost. They take the opportunity to rejoin civilization, coming back to the world that they left so long ago to meld into the cities and to create a few new ones of their own All at once, several new nexuses spring up all over Éolan in the midst of a massive earthquake. Some appeared right in the center of already established cities, destroying them completely. There is a race to take control of these nexuses, to study them and to harness their power. |
462 AU | Humans and Therians against elves, ïoden, kriegen and wilden | The humans have been intrigued with the elves’ ascension ritual since they learned about it, and they manage to create their own version of it. They create the therian race as their personal servants, and when the other races learn about this they are outraged. With the exception of the ku’rasi, all of the races go into a war that only lasts for a few months. This war is known as the War of Ascendance. The humans end up losing, and the therians are set free. The majority of the human cities are taken over by the ïoden, who hope to guide the human race until they’re ready to go out on their own again. |
