During the Age of Darkness, a series of misfortunes occurred. The fae were discovered, and shortly thereafter all of the mortal races were banned from their territories. The ravager race was created, the goreki made their first appearance, the vampire plague raged on, and the vile Penumbra race rose to power over the course of a few centuries. However, not everything in this era was negative. The king of the dragons paid a visit to the ku’rasi capitol, marking the first interaction that any race has had with the dragons. The ku’rasi and the kriegen people became allies after the Wolfrend Clan managed to slay the dire beasts that consumed one of the ku’rasi memory flames. A second nexus was discovered beneath ïoden territory. Without the crises that occurred during the Age of Darkness, it is unlikely that the races would have banded so closely together at the beginning of the Age of Ascension.
Time | Races/People Involved | Description |
995 BU | High elves, fae | During their wanderings, the high elves discover the Elkenwood – the forest kingdom of the fae. The high elves are welcomed into the kingdom and taken to the lord of the Elkenwood – a man whose lower body was that of an elk’s who called himself Oberon. Oberon tells the high elves that they are welcome in his kingdom, as long as they stay on the beaten paths. However, one of the high elves was lured off the path, and Oberon proclaims that none of the mortal races will be allowed into any of the fae kingdoms without a direct invitation. Since then, mortals who have wandered into the Elkenwood have almost never been seen or heard from again. |
812-808 BU | Ïoden, ravagers | The ïoden create the ravager race through the first ascension ritual, but they do it by ascending dire beasts that already have a lot of inherent magic. After a year, about 30% of the ravagers had turned feral and became far too volatile to live in the cities. The ïoden decide that the ravagers are too dangerous to survive, and that it’s their responsibility to put them down. Some of the ravagers manage to escape and flee into the wilderness, but before they leave they manage to steal a copy of the ascension ritual. They start propagating their race in the wildlands. |
783-782 BU 748 BU | Kriegen, Ku’rasi Kriegen, ravagers | The northernmost ku’rasi cities are being threatened by a pack of dire beasts led by an alpha wolf much larger than any dire beast anyone had seen. The pack tears apart a ku’rasi settlement and eats a memory flame, absorbing its power and becoming elementally charged. The alpha wolf becomes ice-touched, and people start referring to it as Rime. The ku’rasi can’t catch it, but the kriegen hear about Rime and offer their assistance. A clan manages to catch and kill the pack, and they become renowned as great hunters. The ku’rasi open their territory to the kriegen for travel and settlement as thanks The kriegen find the ravagers living in their lands, offer them an alliance. The ravagers are permitted to hunt on their lands, as long as they recognize that the kriegen are the ones who own it. Some of the ravagers agree and even join some of the nomadic kriegen tribes and colonies, others disagree and continue to hunt and kill wherever they please |
620 BU | Ku’rasi, dragons | Hathoran, king of the dragons, lands in one of the major ku’rasi settlements to check on his creations. He looks around for a bit, but doesn’t speak until one of the ku’rasi approaches him. After a few hours he flies away, never to be heard from again. |
596 - 580 BU | Ku’rasi | After years of debate, many of the ku’rasi believe that the dragons created all of the races including their own. An age of religious persecution follows, where all other religious beliefs are looked down upon. The ku’rasi king demands that all of the temples and icons from other religions be taken down despite popular belief, and dissent starts to spread amongst the ku’rasi people. In the end, the ku’rasi overthrow their king and do not return his ashes to the memory flames. |
462 BU | Ïoden | The ïoden are attacked by the goreki, an octopus-like people who live beneath the sea, for the first time and are not sure where they’re coming from. Local crops begin to die off, and the ïoden reach out to the high elves for help. The high elves recognize the effects of a nexus, and after much digging one is found deep beneath the earth. |
322 BU 322-320 BU | High elves, vampires High elves, wild elves, dark elves, elves | Ellinthral, one of the more prosperous cities of the high elven empire, gets its entire population eliminated overnight by vampires. The vampires had made their way into the city through the sewers, biding their time and quietly building up an army. The high elves responded by closing off the rest of their cities to all of the other races to protect themselves from the worsening vampire plague. The high elven cities experience a rise in crime and dissent after closing the gates to their cities. In 320 BU it is decided that all of the criminals should be sent off to live in a compound in the Scatterglass Desert (wild elves). Two major groups of dissenters emerge – those who wish to live in the cities inhabited by other races to expand their knowledge (elves) and those who wished to continue to explore and gather knowledge on the world around them (dark elves). These groups leave the high elven cities, knowing that they will never be permitted to return |
288 BU 266 BU | Wild elves Dark Elves, Penumbra | The compound in the Scatterglass Desert becomes overly full as prisoners continue to be sent out, have children, and are never allowed to leave. As the years go by, security becomes more lax and prisoners are eventually allowed to wander inside the compound as long as they exhibit good behavior. In 288 BU the compound is attacked by an old and powerful lich who had been hiding in the very same desert since the end of the War of the Risen. He manages to kill the guards on the outer walls of the complex, but the lich is ambushed by the prisoners inside the compound and they managed to kill him. The prisoners send an envoy to the high elven capitol to tell the high elves what had happened, but the high elves believe that there was a simple prison revolt. They banish the wild elves to the desert, and everyone sees them as dangerous criminals. The wild elves stay in the desert as nomads The elves that had wanted to explore and expand their knowledge had been traveling off to the west, growing their knowledge of the world and of magic in general. Two factions arose within this group – those who were comfortable with psionic magic and those who were not. The psionic group started experimenting with magic that the other group thought was unethical, so once again the former high elves split off. The non-psionic group went off to the western coast and settled in the caves and caverns. They wanted to separate themselves from everyone else to fully focus on their magic and their research, so they took to living underground. They became the dark elves. |
170-150 BU 114 BU | Penumbra, Kriegen Penumbra, dragons Dragon, Ïoden, Elves | The Kriegen become aware of the fact that their numbers are thinning, but they attribute it to the vampires. They launch a crusade against them, beginning a witch hunt where anyone suspected of having vampirism is viciously attacked and driven out of the cities/villages/tribes. The Penumbra take advantage of this fear and use it against the Kriegen, increasing their paranoia through mind control and hidden agents as they gradually gain control over an entire people. In the end, only a few hundred Kriegen survived. The rest were mentally enslaved, used as warriors and fodder for Penumbra. The Penumbra, with the help of their new warriors, manage to subdue and enslave a powerful ice dragon. The result is panic and paranoia amongst the remaining dragons. They manage to capture quite a few kobolds, add them to the horde. The first dragon attacks occur less than a month later. A fire dragon terrorizes ïoden territory, burning villages and killing every living creature it comes across. The Ïoden and the elves set a bounty on its head and send out their best warriors to slay it, but no one manages to come close. |
93-90 BU 78-76 BU | Penumbra, Kriegen, Ïoden High elves, Ku’rasi | The ïoden border becomes threatened by Penumbra, and the bastion starts exhibiting erratic behavior. After several unusual orders that led to lost battles, it is discovered that the bastion is being controlled by Penumbra. Chaos gradually ensues as other ïoden nobles vie for power after the bastion is deposed, and between the political chaos and the sheer force of Penumbra’s army the ïoden race is conquered The high elves and ku’rasi come out of isolation at the behest of the kriegen, ïoden, and elven survivors that come to them for sanctuary and agree that they need to unite forces to stand against Penumbra. Strategies are put into place to slowly dwindle Penumbra’s numbers by attacking cities and outposts at the border of their new territory. Penumbra does not perceive them as a threat, and they simply increase the guards in that area |
