He held up his hands. "I understand that it would have not helped the situation at the trial. But it would have during the investigation."
He leaned closer, placing his forearm on the table. "You and I both know that the Relelhart family is guilty of those murders. That we can agree upon. And they slipped through again. Why? Because they know that you and I alone do not have the power nor ability to investigate every incident that crosses our desk."
Q'tar stood up and started pacing the room, tendrils of electricity starting to circle him again. "Look at the facts we know. They were killed in their sleep and dragged into the woods. The one who recalled what happened when he was resurrected was shut down in court because of an unrelated incident, which turned into yet another investigation we were forced to pursue. We were ordered to investigate what actually happened to those citizens, but we already knew. But folks suddenly forgot what happened that night the lies began flowing out from folks who used to not tell untruths, and murderers went free yet again. This is unacceptable."
"We need a good investigator. We need a trustworthy investigator. We need someone who can perform tasks without us hovering over them. While I agree that the first step to successful rule begins with us, but Cynderfall is getting too big with just us two to manage every little detail."
"There is blood in the water. The Relelharts will do this again, and again, and again. They will continue to create chaos and havoc within our town. As long as our hands stay tied, it will never stop."
The Kur'asi Esquire stopped pacing when he reached the hearth once again, a flash of nostalgia flashed through his mind once again, remembering the easier days. When the citizens banded toigether and defeated the enemy, not them selves. He sighed.

Sharara watches Q'Tar as he paces, listenin.
"Q'Tar, the truth of it is that we don't know. We can suspect and hypothesize all day long, but it changes nothing. Even you agreed with Sir Jacob that Rafael does dumb things, but he always has a reason and that went into Sir Jacob's decision. We had at most twenty minutes for an investigation before the trial started. What could this investigator of yours done in that time that Haka and Zodian hadn't done?" Sharara leans forward to rest her arms on the table in front of her. "Once the trial was over, it was done. I wanted to ask Tree Mother about it since the bodies were taken out there; get our second witness. What annoyed Sir Jacob to tell you to drop it and focus on other things, I don't know. We didn't even find out if Tree Mother would be an acceptable witness. We could have had the truth of it right there."
She sighs a little and after a few moments leans back in her chair again, folding her arms over her chest. "To play some devil's advocate, we had no proof that what he said he remembered was true. All we know is that yes someone can remember the events prior to their ressurrection. It's rare, but it can happen. How do we know what he actually saw? None of us were there with his spirit when it happened. General feelings regarding Rafael aren't exactly secret and Rafael is a prime target for these accusations, true or not. Case in point, the theft from the Lightning Lounge. It was put on Rafael and it was believeable enough for people to believe it until he put the real culprit in front of you. An investigator isn't going to know or be able to learn what happened to someone between their death and their ressurrection. Rafael was deflecting to other issues, yes, but why? Because the fact is he had no more evidence that he didn't do it than there was that he did do it. Neither side had anything other than the words of their own."
One hand lifts to rub the bridge of her nose a little. "We have to move past it, Q'Tar. With the laws you are drafting, it won't matter how much evidence we find that one or both of them were involved. They will have already been tried and released from the charge. If having a personal investigator is something you want, then pay someone to investigate. However, I don't think throwing out more titles and positions in Cynderfall is going to do any sort of good right now. A lot of these people in town now, including your candidate, are people you have known for how long? A few days? Many of these adventurers come and go more frequently than the wind. No..." Sharara releases a breath. "I strongly believe that now isn't the time for instituting official titles and positions. It is for this reason, and other reasons, that I will be offering payment to more than one individual to perform tasks, investigation certainly may be one of those tasks, and to report back to me. I believe, for now, this method will work best to achieve what's needed. It will be fresh eyes, it will be multiple skillsets to utilize based on the situation, it is not outwardly making a show of power or favoritism to one individual, it allows us to be able to gauge the quality of those we set to do things. In this way, if one decides to drift away to adventure elsewhere I am not left without a resource. I know, and I do understand, that you want a solution to it all and you would rather have it now and in simple form, but in the time that you've been gone I've learned that there is nothing about our positions or our decisions that is easy or simple. We have to be careful, we can't rush. Take some time, my friend, to think on it with a calm mind."

Q'tar closed his eyes for a moment, contemplating what Sharara was saying. Just like running off into town at night by herself all the time, he learned quickly that once Sharara has made up her mind, there is no changing it. And what is worse, there will be no justice for the citizens of Cynderfall, again. Now all that remains is the lingering but powerful message that Cynderfall is not a safe place to be. I guess I must face the fact, the Kur'asi thought to himself, maybe everyone is right. Cynderfall is a S***hole, and will always be one.It was at that moment that Q'tar knew what he must do. He turned to face his Squire, the all too familiar tavernkeeper smile on his face. "You are right, Sharara. I must let this go. And I will try to, with every fiber of my being. Now, if you would excuse me." Quietly and swiftly Q'tar made it to the main door of the abandoned tavern "No need to lock the door on your way out, Squire Sharara." he said quietly as he slipped into the sun drenched street...

Her expression turns to one of concern more than anything as Q'Tar's mannerisms suddenly shift as he speaks and sweeps towards the door. "Q'Tar..." She sighs heavily as he disappears out the door.
The Ku'rasi Squire slumps in her chair. It didn't escape her notice that Q'Tar used her title, something tha they didn't really do when it was just the two of them. Something tightened in her gut as she anticipated Q'Tar was going to do something impulsive. She glances around at the dusty, empty room as she thinks about the implications and meaning of his use of 'Squire Sharara', then at the glass she holds before she lifts it and drinks the remaining water in it.
As she sets the glass down, she considers for a brief moment the drinking of spirits. Her lips press together in a thoughtful line. She was doing everything she could. Sometimes there were mistakes, some of which had painful lessons to them. Justice, protection, defense... these things are all for Cynderfall. The moment someone started picking and choosing who it did and didn't apply to would be the moment those concepts are undermined. She had thought long and hard about everything; the trial, being infected, the change in everything that becoming Squire has brought on, the change in her personal relationships. It all had been so dizzying. It seemed that she may have even lost something with Q'Tar this day. She mused momentarily over the reasoning that Seth and Kiori were rarely seen.
It is a long time that she sits there alone in the dust filled dim light of the Lightning Lounge. The sounds of daily activity in Cynderfall greatly muted by the walls around her. Her only company was her own thoughts as she sat there. At last, she slowly stands. "I'm sorry, Q'Tar." The words softly spoken, heard only by the walls and whatever spirits of the past lingered in the place.
Sharara gathers herself physically and mentally, then finally makes her exit from the Lightning Lounge.
